Working on the Railroad

Perhaps the most astounding pronouncement of the night was from Mr Don Kress, President, Codorus Creek Railway Co, during Public Comments.  Mr Kress stated that the Railway is poised and funded to reconstruct the rail line between York and New Freedom starting in April, and to resume freight train operations along the Rail Trail shortly thereafter.  Mr Kress indicated that an out-of-state crew and equipment have been engaged to ressurrect the trackbed, and install crossing guards and signals.  In an email today, Mr Kress said the CCRC plans on purchasing the railroad in the next month, and expect to move their first train between mid April and June. They  plan on spot installing ties along the railroad this summer and and finish up with a complete track rebuilding program that will be finished by March of 2012. This includes replacing most ties, and completely rebuilding the Stewartstown Railroad with new ties, rail and ballast. According to Mr Kress, crossing protection will be installed during 2012. Freight service will start first and passenger service will commence in May of 2012.
